Philadelphia Union stepped in for Freddy Adu after Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara decided against pursuing the deal, it has been revealed.

Adu joined Union yesterday from Benfica in a blaze of publicity.

Adu was all set to sign with Chivas USA, says Fox Sports , and had planned for him to be a Designated Player, but club owner Jorge Vergara decided the move wasn't the direction he wanted the club to go in.

In the end, the 22 year-old's terms were deemed too steep by Vergara and he was allowed to sign with Union instead.
