Philadelphia Union stepped in for Freddy Adu after Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara decided against pursuing the deal, it has been revealed.

Philadelphia Union stepped in for Freddy Adu after Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara decided against pursuing the deal, it has been revealed.

Adu joined Union yesterday from Benfica in a blaze of publicity.

Adu was all set to sign with Chivas USA, says Fox Sports , and had planned for him to be a Designated Player, but club owner Jorge Vergara decided the move wasn't the direction he wanted the club to go in.

In the end, the 22 year-old's terms were deemed too steep by Vergara and he was allowed to sign with Union instead.
