Chivas USA in clear over court battle

MLS club Chivas USA are in the clear as their Mexican namesakes Chivas Guadalajara are engaged in a legal battle in regards to the club's name and trademarks.

Spokesman for MLS, Dan Courtemanche, says the Chivas USA brand only applies to leagues in the United States and Canada meaning anything to do with the Mexican club and their dispute does not involve them.

"Chivas USA has protected its brand in the United States and Canada and is not involved with any of the legal proceedings in Mexico," Courtemanche said.

Current Chivas Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara changed the legal name of the club in 2002 from Club Deportivo Guadalajara AC to Club Deportivo Guadalajara SA de CV but a group of former owners want that amended, igniting a complicated court case.
