Chinese trial for Newcastle Jets captain Thompson

Newcastle Jets captain Matt Thompson has flown out to China to undertake a trial with Changchun Yatai. The 26-year old midfielder says the opportunity to test himself overseas was too good to let slip by.

"They are looking for someone for the rest of this season and another," Thompson said.

"I am 26 now, and if I don't go overseas within the next year I don't think it will happen.

"If they do not like what they see, I come back and continue to play for Newcastle, which is not a problem for me.

"It is nice to be in Newcastle, but you want to make the most of these opportunities.

"Obviously, with me being on contract [with the Jets] there would have to be negotiations between the two clubs.

"As I said, I am there for a week. If they are not interested I come home; if they are then the talking starts."

The Chinese Super League club have just finished their loan deal with Brisbane Roar midfielder Matt McKay and are looking to replace the hole he has left.
