China international in restaurant brawl

Chinese international Mao Jianqing has been arrested by police for his involvement in a restaurant brawl in Shanghai. The midfielder who plays for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua was at the restaurant after his club failed to defeat Zhejiang Lucheng to take the league title.

A fracas broke out involving Mao, his teammate Liu Yintao and former Chinese basketballer Xu Yong and patrons in the restaurant.

Suggestions have been made that Mao be banned from the national squad but club boss Zhu Jun said the 22-year old should be given another chance.

"We were very disappointed for missing out on the championship but it was wrong to vent out anger like this," said Zhu Jun. "He will be fined but we will still give him a chance to correct his mistake."
