Chicago Fire defender Berry wins MLS Rookie of the Year prize

Chicago Fire's Austin Berry has been named the 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year.

The 24-year old defender , who was taken with selection 9 in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, made 28 appearances for the Fire to help the club to the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

Berry, who played in central defence, won a weighted vote between MLS clubs, players and the media to beat DC United's Nick DeLeon, Vancouver Whitecaps attacker Darren Mattocks, Toronto FC's Luis Silva and New York Red Bull surprise packet Connor Lade to the award.
