Chicago Fire managed to come back from a two-goal deficit to defeat San Jose Earthquakes 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifying match on Tuesday night.
San Jose kicked off proceedings at Buck Shaw Stadium in the 14th minute when Ellis McLoughlin picked up a loose ball and hit a deflected shot past Sean Johnson before Justin Morrow tapped home just before half-time.
Just after the hour-mark, the Fire hit back through substitute Orr Barouch who slotted past Quakes keeper Andrew Weber and then Yamith Cuesta headed home to make it 2-2 in the 76th minute, sending the match into extra-time and then penalties.
Despite having ten men for the second part of extra-time, the Fire managed to hold on before triumphing 5-4 in the shootout to move into the next round.
The two clubs will now do battle in MLS at Toyota Park this weekend.
