West Bromwich Albion's John Hartson has rejected the chance to join Chester City on loan.
The 32-year-old Wales international and former Celtic striker had been targeted by the Blues after falling down the pecking order at The Hawthorns, but Hartson is keen not to drop down as far as League Two.
City chief executive Bob Gray told The Evening Leader: "West Bromwich Albion had agreed to John Hartson joining us on loan with a view to us signing him permanently in the January transfer window, but the player won't drop down to play in League Two.
"John feels that he needs to play at a higher level, but he was pleased to hear of Chester's interest and he spoke to our manager, Bobby Williamson, who is a good friend of Hartson.
"Bobby Williamson is still attempting to entice Hartson to Chester."
