Chelsea won't give Arsenal free run at Man Utd's Rooney

Chelsea will compete with Arsenal for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney this summer. The Manchester Evening News says the 27-year-old forward still favours a move away from Old Trafford, although new boss David Moyes will have the chance to persuade him to stay when he starts this week.

New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is a known admirer of Rooney and could hit back with a counter-bid to his Arsenal rivals, which have opened the bidding with a £20 million offer.

United will be keen to secure a decision one way or another on Rooney's future as he enters the final two years of his contract.

The Reds would be reluctant to sell to their domestic rivals but Barcelona, Paris St Germain or Monaco remain options for the forward.
