Chelsea are willing to better Real Madrid's contract offer to Benfica wing-back Fabio Coentrao.
Coentrao is a top target for new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas.
And the Telegraph says he hopes to make the Portugal international his first signing at Stamford Bridge.
Coentrao, who can play as a left or right full-back or a left winger, has a release clause at Benfica of £27 million and, while Madrid are currently his preferred destination, Chelsea, are understood to have clearly indicated that they would offer superior personal terms.
The pursuit of Coentrao is somewhat surprising given Ashley Cole's reputation as the world's best left-back but, at 23, the Portugal international would be a long-term signing and would also offer options in midfield.
