Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko is a major January target for Chelsea.
The Telegraph says it had been thought that Dzeko, the 23-year-old Wolfsburg striker who would cost more than £20 million, was an alternative to Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero but Chelsea are debating whether to now bid for both.
Dzeko, a 6ft 3in Bosnian who has also attracted strong interest from Manchester United and AC Milan, is regarded as having the stature and presence wanted by Carlo Ancelotti who, despite his protestations, is believed to be in the market for another tall striker.
Ancelotti maintained last weekend that he was "100 per cent" sure Chelsea would not buy in January but sporting director Frank Arnesen has been discussing various targets with the club acutely aware that next month may represent the only chance for more than a year to strengthen the squad should the Fifa transfer ban be upheld.
