Chelsea veteran Lampard: What I told Townsend before his dream debut

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard was delighted for Tottenham winger Andros Townsend over his exciting England debut.

Townsend was outstanding in the rout of Montenegro on Friday.

"Andros was brilliant all night. I had said to him in the dressing room, 'Just carry on what you are doing at Tottenham'.

"It is a step-up in your first game for England, but that was one of the best debuts you will see. In international football, you need pace and you need your attacking players to create things out of nothing. You need them to run at defenders. Andros had his goal to top it off. We needed a win, it was nice to get a comfortable one and good to take into Tuesday's match with Poland. We know they will want to come here and put on a show - everyone loves playing at Wembley, for starters. We need to come out firing no matter what they do, though.

"You have to learn from international football. Even Montenegro showed they have some quality players - and so did Croatia on that day they beat us. But I would like to think now that we have the confidence against Poland, and we have the threat going forward, to make sure that it is a different night for England on Tuesday."
