Chelsea veteran Cahill says keeper battle unimportant for England

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill believes all three of England's goalkeepers will be able to do the job when called upon.

Gareth Southgate has yet to announce whether he'll start Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland or Nick Pope for England's first World Cup match against Tunisia.

"I don't see it being an issue," said the veteran defender. "The three keepers will see it as a great challenge to look forward to.

"They're all very talented, there is no question about that. Yes, they're all relatively inexperienced at international level but you only get experience by playing in big games and international matches. You have to get your experience somehow.

"All three of them are good characters, good people. They have the right work ethic to make it to the top, which is why they're featuring in the squad.

"I always say that to reach this standard, half of it is potential and your ability, the other is made up of the rest: mental strength, your character, your work ethic, the way you do things, the way you train. All three of them have got that in their make-up.

"Maybe there is an element of being thrown in at the deep end but I'm sure that's always happened in their careers. For example, their first debut for the club — they will have gone from having no appearances to starting in goal. It will be the same this time around."
