Chelsea have raised their asking price for winger Arjen Robben to £27 million.
However Real, who had believed an agreement with Chelsea to buy the 23-year-old for little more than half that fee was in place last month, are unlikely to meet the new demands and are hoping that they are simply facing a game of last-minute brinksmanship.
Robben has told Chelsea he wants to leave - citing the arrival of Florent Malouda as clear evidence that the club is willing to sell.
Chelsea's suggestions that they have offered him a new five-year deal. A contract offer has been submitted but only on the same terms as he is currently being paid. Given the deal recently awarded to John Terry and the terms other players at the club enjoy Robben believes the offer is derisory and has stopped negotiations. He has two years left on his present contract.
