Chelsea supporters set to boycott Champions League

Soaring ticket prices are set to turn Chelsea fans away from Champions League matches at Stamford Bridge.

Last night, 34,000 supporters turned up to watch the Blues beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 which was the Southwest London clubs worst Champions League crowd since 2007.

A rise of 33% on ticket prices caused the low attendance and supporters groups are now looking to boycott further matches in the European competition.

"Not only am I boycotting Genk, I am also boycotting Leverkusen and Valencia," Chelsea Supporters' Group vice-chairman Michelle Shaw wrote on her organisation's website.

"My choice, I know, but I made the decision as soon as the ticket prices were announced.

"Why? Because I don't want to wake up one May and find I can't afford my season ticket any more.

"The only way to send a message to the club is by a low attendance at the Genk game."

Chelsea reduced their Champions League prices by almost half after fans did not show up for a group stage match against Rosenborg in 2007 as tickets were worth £48.

But prices went back up to £40 this season as the club also increased ticket prices for other competitions for the second straight year.
