Chelsea striker Sturridge: Bolton loan was invaluable

Chelsea striker Danny Sturridge says his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers was invaluable.

He knows that, if he can make the breakthrough at Chelsea this season, it would stand him in great stead for a shot at breaking into Fabio Capello's England squad for next summer's European Championship.

Sturridge told the People: "In a year's time, I want to be recognised as a better footballer, to be playing regular first-team football and to be pushing myself towards the England squad.

"There's a chance for everyone with the Euros coming up and hopefully I'll be able to push myself as far as I possibly can.

"Going to Bolton worked out really well and I don't think I'll ever be able to repay Owen Coyle for what he did for me.

"He said if I ever need to play regular first-team football that the door is always open and, as I say, he has been a huge influence in my career and a person I'll remember for the rest of my life.

"He'll always be the person who gave me the huge opportunity to showcase my abilities.

"I learned a lot about myself and a lot about football at Bolton.

"You will never learn unless you play regularly and to do that sometimes you need to take a chance. I did that and even though it was a big risk to take, luckily it paid off.

"Now I just want to play at Chelsea and I want to cement my place in the team here."
