Chelsea skipper Terry admits England are underdogs

Chelsea captain John Terry admits England are underdogs going into tonight's World Cup qualifier against Croatia.

Terry admitted: "We were favourites to win last time we came here - but maybe that's turned around.

"We haven't come through in the big games recently. I suppose you could say it's not encouraging but I'd say the fans should stay with us. It's been happening for the last two or three years but then France lost the other day, too. International level is difficult, Andorra proved that against us.

"Three or four years ago, people would have expected us to win five or six nil but managers and players are a lot wiser. They play to their strengths. Not only Andorra but all international teams. We've got the players, though, and it's so frustrating saying the same thing for the second year. We have to win back the fans and everybody's confidence in the England team.

"We won't fear Croatia but we'll respect them, like everyone else in the group. There will be no need for a big speech from me. The memory of what happened last time will be more than enough.

"We need to set our standards early in the group. Win, lose or draw, the campaign is not going to be judged on this one game. But they've not been beaten at home and are a very good side.

"They've got every right to be confident because they had a good Euros and were unlucky to go out on pens to Turkey.

"I don't think we underestimated them the last time we came here but I was surprised how well they played."

Terry, 27, reckons England made a serious tactical error in Zagreb last time - playing an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation - and knows it will not happen under Fabio Capello.

The Three Lions captain added: "Everybody talked about the formation we played.

"It was clear after 20 minutes that we should have gone with four at the back and been a bit more solid.

"We're not going to play three at the back again. I think we'll be a lot more solid. Let's not get away from the fact that they are a good side. But our approach will be to get at them early and quieten their fans.

"We want to put some early pressure on them. They're under more pressure than in the past. If we can win the second balls and get our midfield on the ball, we can get at them."
