Wigan Athletic loanee Patrick van Aanholt says he would love to develop as much as Manchester United's Tom Cleverley did at the DW Stadium.
The 21-year old Dutchman is on a season-long loan from Chelsea, which was completed on deadline day, and he hopes he can make an impact like Cleverley did during his 12 months under Roberto Martinez.
"I want to try and emulate what Tom Cleverley did here last season," he told the Latics' official website.
"He took his opportunity and is now playing regularly in the Premier League at Manchester United.
"If I can make the most of my season at Wigan Athletic hopefully it will help me to achieve something similar."
And van Aanholt added that he received a personal call from Martinez saying he was a wanted man at the DW.
"The manager called me personally and told me how he'd love me to join the club and offer me this opportunity," he added.
"That was a big influence and I told him I would really like to come and prove myself to see if I can compete regularly in the Premier League.
"So it feels great to have joined. Everyone has welcomed me very well at the club and I'm delighted to be here.
