Chelsea's Schwarzer becomes oldest Champions League debutant

Mark Schwarzer has become the oldest player to debut in the UEFA Champions League.

At 41 years and 66 days, the Australian goalkeeper was handed a rare start for Chelsea as they beat Steaua Bucharest 1-0 in their final group stage fixture.

Schwarzer, who joined the Blues from Fulham prior to the 2013/14 season, was not kept all that busy during the clash with the Romanians at Stamford Bridge and managed to come away with a clean sheet in his first start in Europe's premier club competition.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said: "Schwarzer didn't have a lot to do but did it comfortably.

"He knows (Petr) Cech is first choice but felt my trust for this game."

Chelsea finished top of Group E courtesy of Demba Ba's 10th minute winner and will now await the Round of 16 draw which takes place on December 16.
