Chelsea’s ‘medicgate’ has outweighed Swansea performance - Monk

Swansea City boss Garry Monk feels his side's showing against reigning Premier League champions Chelsea has been overshadowed.

The Swans took it right up to the Blues at Stamford Bridge in their season opener on Saturday, coming away with a 2-2 draw, in an entertaining affair in West London.

However, all of the press attention has been directed at the saga involving Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and first-team doctor Eva Carneiro with the latter being stripped of her match-day duties for tending to Eden Hazard on the pitch, which forced the Belgian off.

Monk is of the belief that this event has outweighed Swansea's superb performance against the premiers.

"I was focused on my team, I didn't pay attention to what was happening there and it's not my job to give an opinion," Monk said.

"What Chelsea choose to do internally is their choice and the manager has the right to have whoever he wants on the bench, that's his prerogative and for others to judge.

"The disappointing part of it all is that's what the national press has decided to focus on and not the performance my players put on.

"To go to the champions in the first game of the season and put a performance like that on... it's been overshadowed."

Monk added: "I understand that, but it's my job as manager to stick up for my players and give them credit they deserve as much as the criticism when the negatives come their way.

"It's one game and we're not getting carried away. We've got a lot to do but when credit's due we should get it and unfortunately we didn't because the media followed that story."
