Chelsea’s Joe Cole a must for England squad – Venables
Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole is a must for the final England World Cup squad according to the man that led the Three Lions in the 1996 European Championships, Terry Venables.
The former Barcelona, Australia and Leeds boss is adamant that 28-year old Cole brings something to the table that Fabio Capello will need to call upon in South Africa.
“Joe can score important goals, ones that can win games, and he can also make a difference when he comes on as an impact player,” Venables said.
"He can change games because he's not just a player with a lot of tricks, he does his teamwork, gets stuck in and doesn't shirk anything.
"I've got a lot of time for Joe and I was just hoping he'd be fit and ready in time to be in the running.
"A few weeks ago he wasn't ready and his confidence wasn't quite there, but now he's looking like the Joe Cole we all know.
"I'm pleased he's made it because it must have been a really hard fight for him. Hopefully he's going to get the ultimate reward by making the final 23."

Totally agree Roman.
Going tonight with a few lads, noe of whom are Chelsea supporters but we think John Terry should STILL be England Skipper.
As a Chelsea supporter of course I would love to see Joe in the World Cup but let us be honest here. 1 goal against Manchester United and a few sub appearances where his contributions have been negligible to say the least have me wondering if Joe is fit enough. Simple answer is no.
I am afraid Capello has lost the plot though and has gone back on most of what he has said about taking unfit players and players who have not had enough match esperience to the World Cup.
Step Forward Ledley King, Joe Cole and Rio (I only played 14 matches in the last season) Ferdinand. Then his ridiculous decision to include Jamie (unpatriotic) Carragher, who, I hoped is booed every time he touches the ball. How you can pick somebody who has point blank refused to play for their country at the expense of a squad / fringe player who has given his all is totally beyond me and totally unethical. Then there is the sad saga of John Terry. The captain he sacked because of Media pressure based on untrue stories about an alleged affair. Even though this has been hotly disputed by Vanessa Peroncell throughout the ordeal, culminating in a public statement from her last week, Press and media with a couple of exceptions (Mail and Guardian) failed to report this. As far as I am aware there are pretty large lawsuits in progress against offending media but it may come too late to stop JT being rightfully reinstated as England Skipper.
There may be a backlash against Rio Ferdinand at Wembley tonight... although it is not his fault he has an inept Manager at the helm.
The decision to Sack John as skipper has done a lot of damage to England who were joint favourites to win the World Cup before he lost the position. i notice we are 3rd favourites now.
Then you have "Corrupt Handbag man" Lord Triesman who backed Capello even though he was having an affair himself... and then there was David Davis who allegedly was shagging the same bird Sven was... all coming out against Terry! HYPOCRITES!!!
You also have Capello's sinister links with with an online betting website that he has now conveniently pulled out of after the press got involved. What a surprise!
Even if JT had slept with Vanessa then the stuff the FA and their illustrious manager have been up to is just as bad, if not, worse!!!
Even today the SCUM sorry... I mean SUN or was I right the first time, are printing a sob story about Wayne (Ker) Bridge going to LA to get away from the missery of the World Cup and John Terry.
Derrrr!!! Wayne is totally aware of the fact there was no relationship between the two of them as well publicised in the Mail and Guardian and Grazzio Magazine last week.
What the ***** is wrong with you people?
England Fans to Chant John Terry's Name throughout tonight Please. That thick and ignorrant Italian needs to get the message. He will be the one not forgiven if England fail in the World Cup, not John Terry.
Seriously, what is he out to achieve? He sacks the best Captain for the job and now he bans a traditional England anthem as well. Who the hell does he think he is?
