Thorgan Hazard has handed back the Zulte Waregem captaincy just a day after receiving the honour.
The 20-year old Belgian has returned on a season-long loan from Chelsea and was appointed as Zulte's new skipper, replacing Davy de Fauw, but that decision sparked outrage with the clubs fans.
Hazard has now stepped down as captain with Zulte releasing a statement apologising for the situation and making it clear that they do not want the player going anywhere else.
"The SV Zulte Waregem board seriously regrets the commotion which started after the captaincy change," read the statement.
"The chairman, the delegated board member and the coach have done the maximum to keep Thorgan Hazard at Zulte Waregem.
"We ask everyone to support our team, especially Thorgan and Davy, massively today evening and on Wednesday against PSV, a game where still is much possible."
Zulte take on Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven at home this week after losing the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifier 2-0 last week.
