Chelsea’s Cech: We did what we could

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech had a philosophical outlook on his side’s fortunes following tonight’s 6-1 win over Nordsjaelland.

Despite the resounding victory, the Blues were dumped from the Champions League after Shakhtar Donetsk failed to beat Juventus and will now continue their European duties in the Europa League.

The reigning champions will not get the chance to defend their title but Cech was accepting of the scenario as he felt the Blues did everything they could to go through.

"We knew that it could happen," Cech told Sky Sports 2.

"We knew that if Donetsk didn't win then we would be out. Unfortunately that is the reality.

"We did what we could. We had a good performance and scored six goals."

But the Czech international said essentially it was the 2-2 draw with Juventus at home back in September that cost Chelsea their place in the Round of 16.

"You have results where we lost away to Donetsk and Juventus but I think the main difference was the draw against Juve at home," he added.

"We were 2-0 up and then ended 2-2. If you drop too many points in the group then you can't go through."
