Gary Cahill is urging patience from England supporters as the national team looks to rebuild.
The Three Lions have lost a number of senior players recently including ex-captain Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole but Cahill feels there is some positivity around the corner even though their 1-0 midweek win over Norway was criticised heavily by the press and fans alike.
Ahead of Monday night's opening Euro2016 qualifier against Switzerland in Basel, Chelsea defender Cahill has called for some tolerance as Roy Hodgson's players look to work their way into top form with a new-look outfit.
"If we win it would go towards (getting the fans back on side), but I think it's not going to happen overnight," said Cahill after just over 40,000 fans turned up to Wembley on Wednesday.
"Everyone should know and not expect that.
"Everyone needs to be patient with the young players that have come in and don't have the experience of players like Wayne Rooney."
Cahill added: "It's a very young squad.
"Stevie and Frank have retired so you're forced to pick the young players.
"For young ones to come in after the disappointment of the summer and to play now and get your debut now is tough.
"It's hard to come into an England team, never mind when there's so-called doom and gloom out there."
