Chelsea to place emphasis on youth academy

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck says the club now has a refreshed outlook in the way they will acquire players.

With the surprise addition of Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne in the England squad, Buck believes the way to go is through the club's youth academy and not buying big name players.

Mancienne is a product of Chelsea's youth academy but is currently on loan with Championship club Wolverhampton to experience more game time and Buck sees this as the way forward for the Blues.

"The scouting programme is looking at what is best for Chelsea, particularly as we want to focus on English players. We looked at the scouting so the elimination of a dozen or so scouts was not a financial decision," Buck told Setanta Sports.

"He [Mancienne] is a very good young player. Unfortunately we have lots of good players in the first-team squad who play in the same position so in the last couple of years we've sent him out on loan to get game experience.

"We look forward to him at some point making it into the first team. Our objective is to develop players at academy level and bring them into the first-team squad, maybe one a year, maybe one every two years, and in terms of improving your financial situation that's one of the ways to do it.

"I think it does [represent a shift in transfer policy] only in the sense that when Roman Abramovich first came to Chelsea Football Club, from day one he said we have to do something about our academy system, we have to bring in young players to the first team but he was also looking for some immediate success which is why we had to buy a number of players early on.

"But it's the natural progression of things that in the future we try to look more closely at bringing academy boys into the first team."
