Chelsea owner Abramovich critical in convincing Terry to stay

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was critical in convincing John Terry to resist Manchester City's cash.

The Daily Mail says Abramovich convinced his captain he is committed to Chelsea long-term and that he is still ready and able to compete for the biggest names in the transfer market - including Franck Ribery.

Ancelotti also played his part in his own understated way, proving to Terry over the course of this pre-season tour that he will be a good manager to work with and is capable of bringing more success to Chelsea at home and in Europe.

The expertise Ancelotti brings with him from AC Milan, and that of his assistant Bruno de Michelis, the man who spent 20 years developing Milan-Lab, the club's esteemed sports science unit, has also been a factor for a player who has suffered from back injuries.

Such have been the advances in injury prevention at MilanLab that Ancelotti was able to reduce his first-team squad from 34 to 24 and extend the careers of many players well into their thirties, something sure to appeal to a defender who will be 29 this year.

All this, together with the importance of playing Champions League football leading up to next year's World Cup finals, helped Abramovich cling on to his captain.
