Chelsea No1 Cech: England have top keepers

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech says England can boast several top keepers in the current game.

England's Euro 2008 double-header starting next week will give a clearer indication of how Steve McClaren ranks his goalkeepers, with Paul Robinson in the spotlight after his mistake in the friendly defeat to Germany.

David James is considered the in-form choice, while there is a queue of stoppers looking to break into the squad or earn their first caps.

Scott Carson, 22 next week, will be in goal for Aston Villa when Chelsea travel to Villa Park on Sunday, and Cech has tipped the youngster for a bright future.

"In the Premier League you have so many foreign goalkeepers but you still have five or six English goalkeepers," said Cech.

"I think Robinson was number one and is a quality goalkeeper. David James is a quality goalkeeper and Scott Carson is young and he has got a lot of talent. I think he's got a great future in front of him.

"If he gets a chance to play for the national team and a chance to play a whole season, that's going to be good. Because I think Villa will try to finish in the top six or eight and try to get into the UEFA Cup at least. It's very good for him.

"Chris Kirkland has always been unlucky with injuries because he has potential. And even Robert Green now is a contender. He didn't start last season at West Ham as the number one but when he came there he was one of the reasons why they stayed up. So England still have goalkeepers to choose from."
