The Football Association has charged John Obi Mikel following the home defeat to Manchester United in October.
The 25-year old Nigerian midfielder has been accused of using threatening and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour near the match officials dressing room after the 3-2 defeat.
The charge comes in the wake of the FA clearing referee Mark Clattenburg for using racist language towards Mikel on the pitch.
Mikel has not denied the charges but will request a personal hearing so he can explain himself to the FA.
