Chelsea legend Ruud Gullit says English football needed Wayne Rooney to re-sign with Manchester United.
Gullit has insisted that Rooney's decision to stay with United was good for English football.
Gullit, who was at Eastlands to watch United draw 0-0 with City in a dour Manchester derby in midweek, said: "It will be so good to see Wayne return to the United side.
"That will be good for the whole of English football because the City v United game had nothing to do with a good old derby.
"It was an irritating, boring game of chess.
"But when I look at how Sir Alex Ferguson has managed to maintain a place near the top of the Premier League and get so many good results without his star player it just proves what a fantastic manager Sir Alex is."
