Chelsea legend Dixon: Support for Torres cannot continue at expense of team

Chelsea legend Kerry Dixon feels Fernando Torres must soon be axed.

Dixon, 50, insists boss Andre Villas-Boas must continue to wield the axe on the most expensive player in British football - if it benefits his beloved Blues' bid for silverware.

He told the Daily Star Sunday: "Fernando is still one of our players and we have to give him support and believe in him.

"But all that can't come at the expense of results for the team. He needs a goal soon. The club are not going to sit by and play a striker just because of how much he cost.

"I agree with what AVB says and if it does start to affect results he's the man who will take action. When you hand in your CV at work and it says, 'I'm a striker, I score 25 or 30 goals a season'.

"If you don't get one in however many games, people are going to think that you've handed in the wrong CV.

"The manager knows that. He's not going to allow a situation where he's under pressure to play someone who is not delivering the goods."
