Manuel Pellegrini was delighted for Frank Lampard following his final Premier League appearance on Sunday.

The 36-year old midfielder scored in Manchester City's 2-0 win over Southampton at the Etihad Stadium to finish his career in England on a high note before departing for MLS club New York City FC.

After the match, in which Sergio Aguero also scored, Pellegrini said of Lampard: "It was very important to finish the season in front of our fans by winning the game and it was also important for Frank.

"It makes a difference if you win.

"I think he deserves the farewell all our fans gave him in the stadium. It was very important also for him to score.

"I think it was the perfect afternoon and perfect goodbye for him. He deserves it for his brilliant career and being a great person."

Lampard's goal saw him finish his days in England with 259 goals from 882 appearances.
