The London Evening Standard says Chelsea still hope the England international will have a part to play at the club when he retires from the game.
Lampard has started taking his coaching badges and a position in the back-room set-up was discussed during talks over a new contract.
Even if Lampard decides not to pursue a career in coaching, an ambassadorial position is also an option.
