Ivanovic, one his closest friends at Stamford Bridge, believes the club were right to let him go to their rivals.
Asked if he could understand Mata's and Chelsea's decision, he told the London Evening Standard: "This story has not just happened for a couple of weeks, this story has been going for six months. This was the best thing for all sides.
"We will see how important it was for us. I think Chelsea did a great deal and let a player who is not playing at the moment to leave.
"For me, it was really emotional because Juan was one of my best friends in the team, someone I liked as a person. But I wish him all the best. This is football, this is life and he decided to move."
