Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho can understand the ambition of young stopper Michael Mancienne.
With Mancienne taking up a role in the first team squad following a recent loan with Wolves, Carvalho relates to the aspiring star's challenge of replacing either himself or John Terry.
He told Chelsea magazine: "When I first started at Porto, in my position at that time I had players like Jorge Costa and the Brazilian Aloisio, who had been playing together for about five or six years, so it was difficult for me to break through.
"But at that stage in my career I needed to play football, which is why I went on loan to some small clubs in the Portuguese first division. It was important for me because it gave me the chance to play first team football."
