Chelsea are confident of keeping star pair Michael Essien and Ricardo Carvalho away from Real Madrid.

The Mail on Sunday says Portugal defender Carvalho committed to a new five-year contract just a year ago and neither player is likely to be permitted to leave as the club attempt to rebuild a side under a new coaching staff.
