Chelsea captain Terry: Man City offer helped Abramovich contract talks

Chelsea captain John Terry has revealed how he used Manchester City's past interest to land a pay-rise.

The Blues hero was linked with a move to the big-spending City in 2009, with the defender revealing Chelsea rejected a £29m bid. But in the summer of that year Terry penned a new five-year deal at Stamford Bridge worth £150,000-a-week.

On ITV's Play To The Whistle, Terry was asked: "You never thought about going to Man City?"

To which Terry replied: "No, never."

But the defender added: "Also, what that does to you is at the time you clearly want to stay.

"I met Roman [Abramovich] at the time and told him I want to stay. Manchester City had made an offer.

"What it does do is it gives you bargaining power to go in and renegotiate a contract.

"So it gives you a bit of power."
