Chelsea boss Villas-Boas: We could not let Lukaku escape

Chelsea boss Andre Villa-Boas admits it was important to sign Anderlecht striker Romelu Lukaku this week.

Villas-Boas admits Chelsea had to sign Lukaku even though they have five other strikers already at the club.

Lukaku, who trained with Chelsea for the first time yesterday even though the £18m switch has yet to be completed, is only 18 but is already a Belgium international.

Villas-Boas said: "We're outlining details but Lukaku is one of those players we couldn't afford to lose because of his potential. That's why we made a move in the market, although our team is competitive and competent enough in that sector.

"But bearing in mind what he's been doing for the last couple of years at Anderlecht, we couldn't let this boy escape. We managed to move things on to try and bring him to the club and now it's a question of days or hours."
