Chelsea have made a formal £20 million offer for Sevilla wing-back Daniel Alves.

The Guardian says Alves has consistently expressed a desire to move to Chelsea in recent weeks, with the Premiership club now ready to submit a bid.

"We want to make our squad even better," Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, said yesterday. "Right-back is a position where we feel we can improve, but to improve is not easy. You need a good player, and Alves is a good player. We will make an offer, a balanced offer not a stupid one, and if they accept, good. We will try to get the player. If they don't accept it, they don't accept it."
