Chelsea boss Mourinho admits Mata asked to leave for Man Utd

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says there was no dissuading Juan Mata from leaving for Manchester United. Mourinho revealed that Mata, who has been offered a new contract worth £150,000-a-week at Old Trafford, asked him to leave.

The 25-year-old has started just 14 of Chelsea's 33 games this season and is worried about his place in Spain's World Cup squad this summer.

Mourinho said: "I asked him when the offer came in. I asked him: 'Are you really happy to go?' And he said 'yes', he's really happy to go.

"After that we could feel mixed emotions. We are all happy that he goes to a fantastic situation, but at the same time we're all sad. With him, it was a bit the same.

"We decided not to stop him. It's good for Juan. It's good for the League. And, in financial terms, it's the right offer for us.

"This offer, compared with what the club paid three years ago, is fantastic. If he really goes and everything ends well, he was fantastic for Chelsea and Chelsea was fantastic for him."
