Shaun Wright-Phillips came in from the cold to produce a superb performance in Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.
The England winger set-up Frank Lampard for Chelsea's opener ahead of Juliano Belletti hitting his first goal for the Blues later on.
Avram Grant admitted he had been impressed by the former Manchester City player's contribution.
"That is why he is in the squad of Chelsea, the same as everybody else in the squad.
"But he played well and I am pleased."
Wigan boss Chris Hutchings was magnanimous in defeat, refusing to hide behind a pair of albeit unlikely penalties not awarded to his side.
He also refused to suggest Wright-Phillips had taken the ball out of play as he threw himself into touch in the build-up to Belletti's wonderful individual effort.
On the penalty appeals, he said: "Andreas Granqvist just tried to stand his ground and let (Didier) Drogba barge into him.
"I don't have an issue with that.
"With (Marcus) Bent and (Ricardo) Carvalho, it was just a coming together.
"I have no real argument with either of the decisions.
"I certainly don't think they were definite penalties."
As for the decision not to award a throw-in against Wright-Phillips - and some officials could easily have done so - he added: "I didn't think it was out to be fair. My first reaction was that he had just about kept it in.
"I thought it was a right borderline decision. But if it had been clear-cut I would have said."
