Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez admits he had to reassure Branislav Ivanovic after his performance in defeat to Swansea City this week.

The Serb made two horrendous mistakes in the Capital One Cup semi-final against Swansea which led to their two goals, for which he apologised immediately afterwards.

Benitez revealed he has been forced to have a heart-to-heart with Ivanovic to reassure him that his place in the team is safe.

Benitez said: “He’s quite emotional. Mistakes affect him maybe too much.

“I told him I would not be blaming him. We will analyse things but that’s it.

“I’m really pleased to work with him. He has a lot of passion which can be a positive but can also be dangerous.

“You have to have balance. The other day he was really disappointed but I told him ‘I’m blaming nobody for a mistake’ and I have no hesitation in picking him.

“He said ‘sorry’ but when you are doing your best you don’t have to. It just shows he’s a great person.”
