Charlton youngster Poyet insists Sunderland rumours never serious

Charlton Athletic midfielder Diego Poyet insists a move to Sunderland is not on the agenda.

Earlier in the season there had been reports that Poyet could be a target for Sunderland, shortly after his Dad, Gus, succeeded Paolo Di Canio at the Stadium of Light.

But according to the Addicks player, that was never a goer. He explained to the South London Press: "I told my dad what was in the paper and he hadn't seen it.

"I don't know what the future holds for me and where I'll end up playing - but I was never going to make my debut under my dad. That was always going to raise some eyebrows. I never wanted to do that and my dad never wanted me to do that. He has helped me when he can but I've wanted to do it by myself."

Poyet's contract with the South Londoners is up at the end of the season. He is prepared to wait until the end of the campaign before weighing up his options.

Poyet said: "I'm looking forward to seeing what happens and where we are at the end of the season. Then we can sit down and talk about contracts. You never know, they might not want me to sign and I'll have to find a new club.

"At the moment I'm happy. I don't want to rush into anything I regret."
