CHARLTON RECORD: Rooney will not leave Man Utd until this occurs…

Wayne Rooney will remain at Manchester United until he becomes the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

That is according to The Sun who is reporting that Rooney is eager to break Sir Bobby Charlton's record before he departs.

Club captan Rooney continues to be heavily linked with a possible exit having fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho but it is understood that he has one last objective to meet.

Charlton netted 249 goals during his Red Devils career, which ended in 1973, and 31-year-old Rooney sits just three behind the Old Trafford hero on 246.

Earlier in the season it appeared as though Rooney would blitz the milestone set by Charlton but his role and form in recent weeks indicates that he may have to wait to score the four goals required.

That could go beyond the January transfer window when it has been suggested that United could offload the former Everton young gun.

A United source told The Sun: “At heart he is just a lad who wants to play football and he is devastated that he has lost his place.

“But he is determined to stay for as long as it takes to break Sir Bobby's record."
