Charlton Athletic chief executive Katrien Meire has discussed Joe Gomez's sale to Liverpool.

The defender left for around £3.5m and impressed after going straight into the Reds' first team before an ACL injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

"I promised Joe he could go when the right club came in," said Meire to the South London Press.

"As much as I want to keep the players - and I will really try - sometimes it does not work to stop them. You cannot frustrate a player too long."
