Charlton Athletic boss Chris Powell says he never had a problem with former teammate Paolo di Canio.
Di Canio cited the Addicks manager as one of his best friends from when they played together at Charlton, and Powell confirmed yesterday he has never had an issue with him, but said he must answer to his previous comments.
He said: "Paolo was my team-mate and someone I met socially and someone I've met since he's been a manager.
"He was a remarkable player and did extremely well for Charlton. He was a great team-mate and supporters loved him as they did at West Ham and Celtic.
"Sunderland have made a bold decision. I'm sure they knew what was coming.
"If he's made statements on his political persuasion in the past he'll know that'll come up and he has to answer that himself."
