Championship outdraws Dutch, French leagues on opening weekend

The Championship enjoyed a bumper opening weekend for crowds.

The Guardian says Championship attendances averaged 21,007 across the 12 matches that opened the Football League season at the weekend, and it prompted an easily ignored press release about it being a 4% increase on last season's figures.

But that really is some achievement, considering it outstrips the top leagues of both France – which achieved 20,481 despite Bordeaux and Auxerre playing at home – and Holland. Even with Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord all having had home fixtures, average Eredivisie attendances have been 19,239.
