CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WRAP: Bayern Munich and Benfica through as Real Madrid hammer Zagreb

Bayern Munich have finished top of Group A in the Champions League following tonight’s 3-1 home win over Spanish club Villarreal, making it 14 times through to the knockout phase in 15 attempts.

Franck Ribery scored twice for the German giants with Mario Gomez joining him on the score sheet as Jonathan de Guzman gave Villarreal hope early in the second half.

In the other Group A fixture, Napoli edged Manchester City 2-1 in Naples – thanks to an Edinson Cavani double – making it a tight final match-day which will come to down to the Italian club needing a win over Villarreal and hoping Bayern defeat City to move through to the final 16.

Inter Milan’s 1-1 draw with Trabzonspor confirmed them as Group B winners whilst Lille’s first victory in seven Champions League outings – a 2-0 result at CSKA Moscow – has them taking on the 2009/10 winners on the final match-day to try and progress as the Russians meet second-placed Trabzonspor in a very tense group.

Benfica have made it through from Group C after their 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford as last season’s runners-up will have to navigate FC Basel away in their final match after the Swiss club defeated Otelul Galati 3-2 in Romania.

And in Group D, Real Madrid remained unbeaten with a 6-2 hammering of Dinamo Zagreb which came courtesy of a doubles from Karim Benzema and Jose Maria Callejon including the club’s fastest goal in the Champions League which came in the opening 83 seconds to the former.

Lyon and Ajax drew 0-0 in France which makes the final group stage match-day a tricky affair as Lyon would have to comfortably beat Zagreb and hope Ajax are heavily beaten by Madrid.
