CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Shakhtar go top of group with win over lacklustre Chelsea

Shakhtar Donetsk have taken full advantage of a mediocre Chelsea performance by recording a 2-1 win at the Donbass Arena in the Champions League tonight.

The reigning European champions conceded an early goal when Alex Teixeira kept his composure to slot neatly past Petr Cech after the visitors failed to clear properly from a throw-in.

Shakhtar took plenty of confidence from the goal and were looking well up to the task against a Chelsea side in top form and that was evident seven minutes into the second half.

The Ukrainian side made it a two-goal lead when Fernandinho received the ball from Adriano before hooking back across Cech after Eden Hazard had lost possession in midfield.

Chelsea gave themselves hope with two minutes remaining when Oscar grabbed his third Champions League goal from a Branislav Ivanovic cross but the damage had already been done as Shakhtar went three points clear on top of the Group E table.

In the other group fixture, Danish side Nordsjaelland were denied a famous victory by Italian giants Juventus who equalised in the 81st minute through Mirko Vucinic after Mikkel Beckmann's 50th minute opener.

Shakhtar top the group on seven points, with Chelsea second on four and then Juve on three and Nordsjaelland on one.
