CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Rooney ends Man Utd goal drought in Moscow victory

Manchester United left it late to claim the three points and finally get on the scoresheet after a barren time in front of goal with a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow.

United went into this Champions League Group B clash seeking a first home victory over Russian opposition but perhaps more importantly looking to find the back of the net for the first time in three games.

With the group finely balanced three points would be welcome as anything less could lead to some nervy moments in the remaining fixtures to qualify for the knockout stages.

The outbreak of boos at half time followed by chants of 'Attack, Attack, Attack' from the home support told a tale of missed chances, laboured build-up and a general nervousness in front of goal as United's goal drought continued.

Defensively United had looked solid although that was not too difficult against an unadventurous CSKA Moscow outfit who for the majority of the half had coped comfortably with the host's attacking ambitions.

Wayne Rooney had an early chance but shot wide then saw a free kick drift narrowly wide, a couple of dodgy back-passes almost gifted United the lead and Jesse Lingard blazed over followed by a Marcus Rojo effort well off target.

United at this stage were too predictable with their possession allowing the Russian's plenty of time to retreat and cover the gaps. In fact the home side almost gifted Moscow a chance as sloppy defensive play almost allowed Ahmed Musa a free run on goal but Davis de Gea was quickly of his line to clear.

With more of the same after the break the crowd became more restless and vocal in their displeasure at the struggles of their team not helped with how Moscow sensed they might get something out of this game and had began to grow in confidence with a few dangerous breaks.

United's plight was summed up as Rooney failed to collect the ball cleanly on the six yard line during a scramble with the goal gaping. Rooney and Ashley Young had claims for penalties but more in hope than expectation. Michael Carrick drove wide from distance as the visitor's defended grimly.

Moscow substitute Seydou Doumbia should have scored from close range but somehow United scrambled the ball off the line. Then almost immediately the home side broke the deadlock to a relieved roar from the Old Trafford faithful.

Lingard, who had been tormenting the Moscow defenders all night, volleyed a cross onto the head of the umarked Rooney who finished clinically.
