CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - Ro16: Birthday boys Di Maria, Cavani run riot as PSG put Barcelona to the sword

PSG have dominated the Champions League Round of 16 first leg by beating Barcelona 4-0.

Unai Emery's French giants were sublime at the Parc des Princes by putting Luis Enrique's Barça to the sword for the entirety of the contest.

A brace from Angel Di Maria, on his 29th birthday, and goals ether side of the break from Julian Draxler and Edinson Cavani, who turned 30 today, have put the reigning Ligue 1 champions in a commanding position ahead of the return bout.

PSG were looking menacing early in the encounter and got their reward in the 18th minute through Di Maria.

The Argentine stepped up to a dead ball and superbly hit his free-kick up over the wall and down beneath the crossbar with Marc-Andre ter Stegen scrambling.

The second goal came five minutes before the break when Adrien Rabiot won the ball off Lionel Messi in midfield, resulting in Marco Verratti finding Julian Draxler on the right side of the area, allowing the German to pick his spot and hammer beyond ter Stegen for his first European goal for his new club.

10 minutes into the second half and PSG found themselves three to the good when former Real Madrid ace Di Maria whipped a lovely effort into the top corner after some incisive lead-up play which started with goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

PSG weren't done there though and managed to score a fourth with about 20 minutes remaining when Cavani was played through by Thomas Meunier, who had ambled into the attacking half under no pressure.

The Uruguayan fired past ter Stegen at his near post to mark his milestone birthday with his seventh Champions League goal of the season.

On 83 minutes, Barcelona had a great chance to nick an away goal but former PSG defender Samuel Umtiti somehow put his pointblank header into the bar when it appeared harder to miss than score.

That piece of play summed up Barcelona's night and they will head back to Catalonia with their tail between their legs after their worst-ever European defeat.

The return leg takes place at the Nou Camp on March 8 with Barcelona facing elimination at this stage of the competition for the first time since 2006/07, while PSG may have announced themselves as the new favourites to win the European title.
