Borussia Dortmund have managed to hold off a fast-finishing Zenit Saint Petersburg to move through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League courtesy of a 5-4 aggregate victory.
The reigning European runners-up got the better of Zenit last month, winning 4-2 in Russia, which had them feeling comfortable ahead of the return bout.
But things turned quickly when Hulk opened the scoring for the visitors at Signal Iduna Park with a fabulous finish when he fired past Roman Weidenfeller from 30 yards after turning his man in the 16th minute.
That sent a few scares through the BVB camp as it reduced the deficit to just one goal but the home side were able to restore their pre-match two-goal advantage late in the first half when captain Sebastian Kehl met Marcel Schmelzer's cross with a powerful header.
Zenit, who saw Luciano Spalletti sacked as manager last week, had new boss Andre Villas-Boas looking on from the stands and the players were doing all they could do to impress by pushing forward at any opportunity.
A second goal came in the 73rd minute when Domenico Criscito played a ball towards substitute Salomon Rondon for the Venezuelan to stoop home a header which gave the Russians plenty of hope.
However, Juergen Klopp's Dortmund side did all they could to deny the attacking threat of Zenit, who were being looked after by Sergei Semak, allowing the Germans to advance to the final eight.
Dortmund will now be drawn against Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Chelsea or Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals.
